What brings thousands of Estonians together in one place? And why are they singing? Foreigners often wonder about the mystical tradition of song celebrations, about how it is possible that every 10th Estonian will meet at festival grounds to sing under a giant arch every 4–5 years. Estonia has a long-standing tradition of music, dance and folklore. This year we are celebrating the 150-year anniversary of the first song celebration. Use case: building a smart city with data-driven solutions, inclusivity and innovation in Tartu

On 1 July 2019, a new data-driven bus route network will be launched in Tartu. This city in South Estonia has made it its mission to create a smart city for the citizens through harnessing the benefits of big data analytics. Unlocking the potential of big data analytics: Mobile phone data workshop in Rwanda

Mobile phone data offers unique opportunities for national statistical offices in Africa. Without the necessary knowledge or skills, however, it is difficult for them to use this innovative data source for the benefit of their countries.  

To help the national statistical offices in Africa, the United Nations Statistics Division hosted a Workshop on the Use of Mobile Phone Data alongside the 5th International Conference on Big Data for Official Statistics. We spoke to Karoly Kovacs from the UN Statistics Division about what knowledge was unlocked at the workshops and what the future holds for African statistics in regard to the use of new data sources.

Project Highlight: Analysing Asian Games, the Biggest Sports Event in Asia

The Asian Games is a multi-sport event held every four years among athletes all over Asia. This is the biggest sports event in Asia, comparable to the Olympics. This year, the event took place in Indonesia from August 18 - September 2 in several locations in Jakarta, Palembang and Bandung. The 18th Asian Games attracted visitors both locally and abroad. Mobile positioning data was used for the first time to analyse the impact Asian Games had on tourism.

3 Key Takeaways from Mobile Tartu 2018

The biennial Mobile Tartu conference took place from June 27–June 29 in Tartu, Estonia. The international conference brought together participants from all over the world. The three-day event kicked off with an activity-packed PhD seminar at Mooste Manor where the participants got to know one another and enjoy the first sessions of the conference. The second day took us back to Tartu, to the open space of Omicum, where the sessions continued on the wide range of smart ways to use mobile data to learn more about people and their mobility. The third and final day wrapped the event up with mobile positioning data (MPD) use cases from Positium LBS and explored using this type of data for tourism statistics.
